Aligners

(Al Lulu Medical Center, Sharjah, Tel:06-5646252)

AlignersFROM posted mail to instant text messaging, infrared to bluetooth, keypads totouchscreens; research has led to the development of new technology that makes things simpler, faster and more efficient. The orthodontic profession is no different.   An increasing demand for greater esthetics and comfort during treat

ment led to the invention of white, tooth coloured braces to replace silver metal; braces that can be positioned behind the teeth instead of at the front and more recently, clear aligners to replace braces altogether.   Aligners are removable plastic sheets that are worn over the teeth, applying pressure on them to gradually move them into place. Each sheet is worn for one to two weeks, after which it is thrown away and replaced with a new one.

The plastic is transparent so it is barely visible to others while talking. It is also smooth and fitted to the contours of the teeth so it does not hurt the inside of the lips or cheeks as regular braces may. Since aligners can be removed by the patient, chewing hard foods, brushing and flossing are all possible.   One minor drawback to treatment with aligners however, is that they can not be used to treat every patient. Complicated cases such as those where extractions of teeth are required will need to be treated with regular braces. Patient co-operation is also very important, since the teeth will not move if the aligners are not worn for 24 hours as instructed.   To date, aligners are the most comfortable and esthetic treatment option in orthodontics, making them increasingly popular with patients around the world.

ORTHODONTICS

Dr. Aisha M Hussain, D.D.S., ANDB certified, MSc Dentistry (Orthodontics) currently work with Al Lulu Medical Center in Sharjah ( Located on Al Arouba Street, Between Atlas Mall and Lulu Center- Tel: 06-5646252) .
She has participated in conducting a randomized clinical trial concerning retention treatment protocols following orthodontic treatment with the twin block functional appliance, the results of which she has presented at international conferences.  She has also trained at the orthodontic clinics of a leading Malaysian university and at the Kota Bharu government hospital.
Most people seek orthodontic treatment as a means to achieving a beautiful smile. In addition to improving esthetics however, aligning crooked or protruding teeth plays an important role in maintaining their health and function. For children who are still growing, orthodontics may also help improve any discrepancies in their jaw relationship.

The Orthodontic department at Al Lulu Medical Center offers a wide range of treatment options to suit individual patient needs, for both children and adults.
These include:
 1) Functional appliances  For growing children who require jaw relationship correction/skeletal growth modification.
2) Removable appliances  For correction of minor displacements in tooth position.
 3) Fixed appliance treatment  To correct irregularities in tooth position including crowding, spacing and rotations. Stainless steel, ceramic (clear) and self ligating brackets are available.
4) Clear aligners  For patients for whom aesthetics are a priority, aligners offer a solution for treating tooth irregularities without the need to place steel brackets.  Depending on the problem, one to two years are usually necessary to complete orthodontic treatment. During this time, patients will need to come to the clinic every four to six weeks for follow up appointments.  After the teeth have been straightened and the patient is happy with their smile, the braces will be removed and replaced by a retainer. The function of a retainer is to hold the teeth in place until they are stable in their new position. A retainer comes in many forms; it may be removable or cemented to the back side of teeth where it cannot be seen. It may be made of acrylic, plastic or stainless steel. The orthodontist will advise the patient about the type of retainer best suited for their case. Removable retainers have to be worn for a minimum of one year.  First time consultation with theorthodontist is free. Patients are welcome to visit and discuss their need for orthodontic treatment, its benefits, optimum timing and treatment options.

Clinic Timings: Saturday – Thursday, 12.00 until 8.30pm. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 06-5646252
